Paris-Saint Germain’s intentions, led by one of the wealthiest men on the planet, have been clear from the get-go. They have not tried to hide that while they can cruise past the Ligue 1 with ease, their ultimate goal remains to lift the big ears, better known as the UEFA Champions League.
Well, they came tantalisingly close in 2020, losing by a solitary goal against Bayern Munich in the finals as Kinglsey Coman scored the winning header.
The mission began again in the following season, but halfway through it, the reigns were handed over to Mauricio Pochettino, who could not guide them there and missed out on the league title to Lille in the process.
PSG clearly took that personally and began building a super team, if there ever was one. After signing Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, and Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goal is Lionel Messi, which will the ultimate cherry on the cake.
But how will their lineup look like? We at Barça Universal break it down:
Donnarumma
Marquinhos Ramos Kimpembe
Hakimi Verratti Gueye Kurzawa
Messi Mbappe Neymar
Defence: As good as Keylor Navas is, he will be up against one of the biggest footballing talents in Donnarumma. Moreover, with Mino Raiola as his agent, it seems unlikely that the Italian takes up a bench role.
Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe were two of the world’s best centre-backs last season and seem undroppable. A three-at-the-back seems like the best way to go, especially with their midfield and Sergio Ramos’ playing style.
Midfield: Hakimi is among the few players in the world who play exclusively as a wing-back, and his performance levels are too high in that position to drop him. Layvin Kurzawa, too, loves to attack, and is a natural fit on the left side of the four-man midfield.
Marco Verratti, when fit, is one of the best central midfielders in the world, and probably the most complete one too. He is likely to be the anchor in that midfield with Idrissa Gueye as the destroyer.
Attack: Oh well, where to start with that attacking trident. In Lionel Messi, they have the best player in the sport’s history, playing along side the man who will take over his throne — Kylian Mbappe. Not to forget, Neymar, who shared a fantastic on and off pitch bond with Messi for years.
That front three is not only brilliant on paper, but should work superbly on the pitch as well. Mbappe makes piercing runs across the pitch and Messi and Neymar love to play with a player who makes off-the-ball runs.
Moreover, they can easily mould it in any shape with all three players comfortable centrally and in the half-spaces on the wing.
Angel di Maria can serve as a more than able deputy to either of these players, with Mauro Icardi also joining the list of brilliant players that may not be able to make it off the bench with MNM. Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
