Greuther Furth vs Bayern Munich: Lineups, team news, new faces on the wing, and more! (Updated) – Bavarian Football Works

Filed under:
If Gnabry and Musiala can’t play, who will Nagelsmann put on the wings?
It’s been about a week since Bayern Munich last played a game, and all the easier fixtures are drying up. Next up is Greuther Furth, a potential relegation candidate who shouldn’t be too tough to beat, provided Nagelsmann doesn’t do something silly. Let’s hope we see some experimentation for the game.
Kingsley Coman is still working on his comeback after a heart surgery, while Corentin Tolisso is also out for the game. Jamal Musiala (ankle) and Serge Gnabry (flu) have returned to fitness and will be available for the game, while Christian Fruchtl is set to replace the injured Sven Ulreich on the bench.
So how will Bayern line up? With Musiala and Gnabry unlikely to start per the coach’s press conference, Nagelsmann may opt for someone new to support Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller up top. Could it be one of the youngsters, like Armindo Sieb or Malik Tillman? Or will we see Alphonso Davies shifted up to the winger position like he played back in MLS? It’s hard to predict since the final training session is still underway, but for Nagelsmann this would be a good opportunity to give some youngsters their debut.
Midfield might be more of the same. While Bayern fans are clamoring to see Marcel Sabitzer finally make the starting XI Nagelsmann might go with Marc Roca … just kidding. We all know that Joshua Kimmich will start, with Leon Goretzka right next to him. If the coach is planning any surprises, then I’d have to hide in the bushes at the Sabener Strasse to find out.
The defense should also be more of the same. Lucas Hernandez apparently suffered a minor knee injury in training yesterday, which could prompt Nagelsmann to start a pairing with Niklas Sule and Dayot Upamecano in the center, flanked by Alphonso Davies and Benjamin Pavard at fullback. Manuel Neuer, as usual, should be in goal.
If these predictions hold up, then here’s how Bayern could line up tomorrow:
Literally anyone could be on the wing tomorrow. Here are some options:
Looks like we may see winger Davies at long last!
Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry will both be in the squad tomorrow but are unlikely to start. In today’s final training, Julian Nagelsmann practiced with Alphonso Davies on the left wing, Lucas Hernández at left-back and Leroy Sané on the right wing [Bild]
Bayern Munich travels to Greuther Fürth in a Bavarian derby this weekend. Fürth is at the bottom of the table with only one point to their name, having been thrashed by VfB Stuttgart on opening weekend. They lost to Hertha Berlin last weekend after having gone up a goal courtesy of a Branimir Hrgota penalty.
In this podcast, we take a look at some changes Julian Nagelsmann might make ahead of Bayern’s game against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League in midweek; we also look at Greuther Fürth’s struggles and how we think this game will go. We wonder if Marcel Sabitzer might get a start and if Joshua Kimmich (gasp) might get a rest!
